ET35 vs ET40

Going from ET35 to ET40 moves each wheel 5 mm inward. Track width changes by -10 mm across the axle.

What is the difference between ET35 and ET40 wheel offsets?

With the same wheel width, ET40 sits 5 mm farther inward than ET35, providing 5 mm more clearance at the outer arch but leaving 5 mm less clearance at the strut or spring. Across an axle, track width narrows by 10 mm. This geometry does not prove the wheel is safe to fit; confirm wheel width, tyre position, brake and suspension clearance, load rating, centre bore, bolt pattern and manufacturer guidance first.

A 5 mm change is small — usually absorbed by existing clearance and rarely visible.

What changes

MeasurementChange
Wheel position5 mm inward
Outer clearance (to the arch)+5 mm
Inner clearance (to strut and spring)-5 mm
Track width (both wheels)-10 mm
Offset change+5 mm

Offset is a one-for-one measurement: every millimetre removed from the ET number is a millimetre further out, and a millimetre gained on the inside. This holds at any wheel width, because offset moves the whole wheel rather than changing its size.

Where the rim edges sit

Wheel width does change where the edges land, because extra width splits either side of the mounting face. Distances below are measured from the hub face.

Moving inward

Higher offset pulls the wheel further into the arch. That buys arch clearance and tucks the wheel visually, but it spends inner clearance against the strut and spring — the more dangerous direction, because contact there can wear a tyre sidewall without ever being visible from outside.

These figures are the geometry of the offset change alone. Your car's arch shape, liner position, suspension travel and ride height all decide whether the clearance you have is enough. Measure before you buy.

Model it with your wheel and tyre

The fitment calculator takes wheel width and tyre size alongside offset, so you can see the combined effect rather than offset in isolation.

How are these fitment figures calculated?

Fitment North calculates declared wheel and tyre geometry from the dimensions shown on the page, using the same tested method as the wheel-offset and tyre-size calculator. Tyre diameter uses rim diameter plus two calculated sidewalls; offset comparisons split width changes across inner and outer edges before applying the offset difference. Results are measurement aids, not vehicle approval. Confirm ratings, clearances and manufacturer guidance before fitting parts.
